Yangon Central Railway deadline extended

State-owned rail group Myanma Railways (MR) has extended the deadline for its Yangon Central Railway Project to 6 January 2016.
An MR source informed this new service the two additional months will allow bidders extra time to sufficiently prepare the documents. An unspecified number of companies had already submitted EOIs in accordance with the previous November deadline, but the source explained that all the EOIs will be evaluated and a shortlist released after the new deadline next year.
As previously reported, local media reported three groups expressing interest in the project. Shortlisted parties will present detailed business plans to the Ministry including a construction timetable and what is described by the Ministry as a “possibility of contribution to [the state].”
The project is a retender to refurbish the ageing Yangon Central Railway. The complex has not been upgraded since it was built the 1950s when Myanmar was under British colonial rule. A retender was launched in August after prices of bids submitted in late 2014 were lower than expected. MR declined to comment on changes that were made from the previous tender.
